I recently screened "Holy Mountain" as part of a film series and people generally hated it. I thought it was dated and didn't hold up well. Could be a great piece for the history of the hippie era but somehow its too long and runs a bit hollow these days. What do you think/

i've got a fairly poor (but watchable) copy of this, and from what i've heard, there are no versions that exist with subtitles. it's a fairly easy to follow film, but i'm trying to find a better quality version of it, or maybe one with subtitles.

he is one of my very very favorite filmakers. i think i've seen everything and loved every minute of it. but i have always hated the idea of any filmakers treating animals badly. but i find myself forgiving him in a way for his drastic animal abuse and killing anyway. i find that odd that i can let it pass in one case only because he is such a genius. if i were there while it was happening, i don't think i could take it. but i can dissociate somehow and find the scenes beautiful.

Holy Mountain ending

I was wondering what you made of the ending to Holy Mountain? Not the breaking of the film illusion at the very end, but what happens to the thief who is paired with the ex-prostitute and the ape. It's interesting that the thief is left in the illusion of imortality (he doesn't get to see the false immortals). He also is given the instruction: "Forget the summits, change the world." Another curious thing about this scene is that the alchemist, through symbolic substitution, becomes a slaughtered lamb spurting a fountain of blood (another Christ image). What do you think Jodorowsky is getting at here?

Favorite scenes and dialogue...

Well, who can narrow it down to a favorite scene... but I gotta say that the opening (hey the first scene, the first twenty minutes, the whole damn movie for that matter) of Holy Mountain, when I first saw it back around 1985, was just jaw-dropping in its hallucinatory splendor, in the way few movies have affected me since, except for Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle (and I don't mean to put Barney in the same league as AJ: MB is a mere artiste, whereas AJ is a true visionary...)...

But the dialogue that always cracks me up is also in Holy Mountain, the part toward the end where they are climbing the mountain, and they kneel around the prone body of the thief, and the one guy bolts and runs off in disgust:

"His feet stink like a rotten dog!"

And the Master runs after and accosts him:

"He have byooteefull teeth!", as he proceeds to kick the shit out of the ingrate:

"When he poot yore bones back toogether, you will like hiss smell"...

The Hidden Cabal of EL TOPO

EL TOPO is my favorite of Jodorowsky's films for its highly personal, interior and symbolist vision. The frist time I saw this film back in the seventies, I was shocked by the violence and couldn't get past seeing the film from my literalist mindset. I walked out of the theatre feleing sick and disgusted.

I told a friend of mine, someone I saw as wider than myself, about my experience. He suggested that I see the film, again, but not take anything literally. He asked me to view every scene as a symbolist ritual representing archetypal forces at work in a larger arrangement of The Journey archetype colliding with The Crucifixion archetype.

OK. I knew what he meant on a conceptual level which was enough to spark my curiosity. W-O-W. Like, W-fucking-O-holy-W! The second time I saw EL TOPO (through this symbolist framework), I saw an entirely different film. I saw a masterpiece of cabalistic cinema.

Take the four master gunfighters, for example, that El Topo had to slay. I saw them as symbolic of four brains or intelligences: Physical (the yogi), Emotional (the cage-maker), Intellectual (the rabbit farmer) and Spiritual (the old goofy guy). Killing the first three resulted in spiritual suicide (the old goofy guy killed himself) and the beginnning of his underworld initiation into rebirth.

I am curious to find out if and how others may have viewed EL TOPO from a non-literalist, more symbolic vantage and what they saw as a result of making this perceptual shift.

Fando & Lis

last night i watched it. GREAT movie, made me almost cry. very well & very stylishly made, & very, very different from his better known movies. it makes an important statement about various aspects of the human condition. its mature sense of the tragic reminds me a bit of his later movie Santa Sangre.
for anyone who doesn't know, the characters come from a Fernando Arrabal play, but my understanding is that this movie is *not exactly* that play, but another story altogether.
now...can anyone tell me, succinctly & factually...WHY, besides the fact that some pissed off viewers rioted, did the Mexican goverment ban this film?

The Box

So over the past week I watched all the DVDs in the box set with commentaries & extras (including the cool documentary La Constellation Jodorowsky)... my longheld estimations of the artist are irrevocably confirmed: Jodorowsky is an authentic & unique sage & mystic of our times. When I saw a double feature of Topo & Holy Mountain in the cinema in the mid-1980s while tripping on LSD it totally changed my worldview from an atheistic existentialist materialist perspective to an organic & symbolic archetypal perception of life and reality (and led my on a long investigation of occult, esoterica, and transpersonal psychology).

This DVD reissue is the video event of the new millenium, I must say. I have seen El Topo over half a dozen times in the theater, on bootleg VHS tapes and DVDs, over the past 25 years and this remastered and restored print is a revelation to behold. And the soundtracks are awesome as well. What a body of work to come into general circulation once again at this time of global consciousness accelerated transformation...

A Christlike figure wanders through bizarre, grotesque scenarios filled with religious and sacrilegious imagery. He meets a mystical guide who introduces him to six wealthy and powerful individuals, each representing a planet in the solar system. These six, along with the protagonist, the guide and the guide's assistant, divest themselves of their worldly goods and form a group of nine who will seek out the Holy Mountain, in order to displace the gods who live there and become immortal.

- Fascinating, boring, beautiful, ugly, irritating, pretentious, witty and profoundly original. 'The Holy Mountain' will blow your mind!
'El Topo' is still one of the strangest movies ever made but Alejandro Jodorowsky amazingly managed to top himself with 'The Holy Mountain'. This movie contains some of the most weird and wonderful scenes in the history of movies. It is filled with bizarre images which draw upon many religions and occult philosophies, and seems to be inspired equally by Bunuel and the comic book sci-fi surrealism of William Burroughs. It's a cliche but when I say you have to see it to believe it I'm not lying! The movie is roughly in three sections. The first documents the trials and tribulations of The Thief, a Christ figure. The second introduces The Alchemist (played by Jodorowsky himself) and his seven disciples who are each represented by a planet. The third sees all these odd people (and a chimpanzee) go on a pilgrimage to "The Holy Mountain". I found the third section to be much less interesting than the other two, and that, combined with the sensory overload of the earlier parts of the film, makes it not as successful as 'El Topo' for me. But there's no denying that this is an extraordinary movie and anyone who appreciates strange and challenging films will find this to be the strangest and most challenging of all. Jodorowsky makes David Lynch look like Michael Bay! I can't truthfully say I get 90% of what he's getting at but boy, is it a trip trying to figure it out!

- A stream of consciousness movie
The Holy Mountain is best described as a stream of consciousness--like a really weird dream. It's the kind of movie that keeps you watching just to see what happens. You never know where it's going next. Some parts are certainly better than others, but every scene has something memorable about it.

Jodorowsky is part Luis Bunuel (An Andolousian Dog, Viridiana), part Fellini (La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Amarcord), and part David Lynch (Eraserhead, Blue Velvet). If you enjoy those three directors, you'll probably find this one worth your while. But if strange, off-beat art films leave you cold, don't bother with it.

- This film is by the guy who said 'I am to film what LSD is to the mind'. That is exactly right in this movie. It makes sense on a higher level of consciousness which most won't catch by seeing the barrage of symbolic images and scenes linked together..however it is a masterpiece of weird cinema. If you're not into pretentious surreal art like Salvador Dali then this isn't for you. He later did Santa Sangre which is an amazing film with a more coherent story.

- First, take a deep breath. Now after a momentary pause take another deep breath. Do these (deep breaths) for a few minutes then open YOUR eyes. That's right, now open your eyes and watch Jodorowski's THE HOLY MOUNTAIN. After viewing this magnum opus of a film, really open YOUR eyes and really take a deep breath for it will do a body good. Enjoy!!!

- Mind-blowing.
I first saw this movie at a friend's house, who essentially sat me down in front of the TV, put this movie on, and made me sit and watch. At first I was a little skeptical; I tend to be somewhat picky when it comes to the movies I watch, and the vague description of it he'd given me hadn't exactly piqued my interest. Right from the first frame though, I was drawn in by the sheer visual artistry and deep symbolism, almost hypnotized by the magic on the screen before me.

True, many people won't understand much of it the first time or two they watch; in fact few will perceive any of the underlying symbolism until several viewings later. But with each subsequent viewing more and more becomes evident, even obvious where it had been obscure before, and the viewer will find themselves even more mesmerized and in love with the sheer beauty than previously.

Truly a mind-blowing movie, that had an ~enormous~ impact on me, my life, and my mind.

- An absolutely brilliant film both in concept and execution.
The Holy Mountain is an epic exploration of religious experience and global socio-political trends. A scathing indictment of the abuse of power by both first and third-world nations, while simultaneously a wonderfully clever fantasy that exposes art and religion as hilarious tools of mass-mind-control. It is a truly sweeping masterpiece full of amazing imagery and even more impressive thought. And it also has one of the best endings you are likely to see -ever. Too bad it is almost impossible to find.

- This is not only, in my opinion, the best movie by maestro Alexandro Jodorowsky, not only the best movie ever made in Mexico or Latin America, or not only the best movie ever...I would say that this sort of work ranks along with the bible or the alcoran of the muslims. It is a proposal with not only an incalculable artistic achievement, but a movie that goes beyond that...A proposal about the human condition, and how to achieve perfection and reach holiness, just like the bible seems to do. As far as a movie, it synthesizes his Panic proposal of the artwork and the world like no other of this work, and can be interpreted in many ways. It's meaningful for everyone who sees it, and cannot be ignored, causing a deep conmotion in every spectator, and him/her to actively participate in the search. In a few words, it is a revelation. A revelation that some people doesn't want you to experience. I dont know how many of you know that the original copies of this movie and El Topo were destroyed by Allen Klein (at least that's how Jodorowsky put it). So, I guess that we the few people who have seen it are very lucky and must really asume that we are. I would synthesize the argument this way (this is what I roughly understood): All the icons that man has created reunite in his mortal form to achieve inmortality, and ultimately holiness. For that, they must become a group, and fuse with a "great self", loosing the concept that each one has of his own. The thief represents christianity, and the rest of the searchers represents a good of the greek pantheon each (Jodorowsky representing the sun, and Ramona Saunders the moon). All of them are thieves, 6 of them represent the most powerful people on the earth, and all of them know that they are mortal. This movie does not criticize any religion, and is not surrealistic either, nor an excersise in sadomasochism (we may be able to say that about "Fando & Lis", his first movie, because that one is an allegory of the couple relationship). Each symbol relates perfectly into a structure that leads you to the end, in which you must participate and assume your own humanity, forgetting about what you understand as "identity". Nevertheless, to come to this conclusion you have to had come across some reading before, and know Jodorowsky's work somehow. Its good that this movie is rated as that because it shows that it caused a reaction, which I believe was the main point, but misunderstood anyway, which has doomed its fate. I am sorry it has been discontinued, mainly because it was misunderstood. I started to become afraid that it would disappear from the face of the earth, but this is the kind of movie that does not become old with time. Its like wine, the more time it spends away, the better it will taste, hopefully. Younger generations seem to like it more than that when it was made. A true view ahead of its time, and perhaps our, because if not, we would be able to buy it at Wal Mart enjoy it without fearing that lawyers would come and get us. Perhaps it just wasnt meant for that.

Though I have the DVD of Fando and Lys, I'm always on the lookout for copies of Jodorowski's films, especially DVD format ones... but apparently there's some crazy Christian producer guy who bought up the prints of Holy Mountian and El Topo in an effort to keep them from being distributed. Dang! So anybody with any news about releases or the disposition of his films please post!

Most of the misinformation about the following items is the result of Tropical Astrology being so completely out of time, out of correspondence and incomplete. Using the primary Tropical technique (the sub-law of substitution) they tried to assign delineation to all manor of irrelevant things in an attempt to explain the constant flow of events that occur in ones life for which the incomplete Tropical system has No corresponding symbology.

The technoids especially the ones that fail to grasp the big picture tend to try to drag all manor of mathematical what not into it. Essentially Azimuth, Altitude, Right Ascension, Declination, Equatorial, Apogee and Perigee, how close a planet is to earth, and so forth have nothing to do with astrological delineation. IT IS SIDEREAL ZODIACAL LONGITUDE THAT COUNTS.

Fixed Stars of the 1st and 2nd magnitude extra-Zodiacal of which that count are mostly in the northern latitudes, aspected to or conjunct (in Sidereal Zodiacal Longitude) any angle within a one degree orb equal a conjunction of the Intrinsic Value of the star and the angle. Stars aspecting a Natal or Secondary-Progressed planet, or an angular or angular house cyclic chart planet within a zero degree orb count via Intrinsic Value of star, planet and aspect.

When Stonewall Jackson’s Secondary Progressed Primary Descendant transited his natal Pluto he was shot dead by his own troops and it did not matter what the RA of the left handed Moon Node was or how close the planet was to earth.

Here is an exception case example. Saturn is earthquakes. So one day I asked Mazurek how to tell what latitude the earthquake would occur With Saturn on the Midheaven. He said in the supplement to the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac there is a formula that will give this answer. However as far as delineating a horoscope it is strictly Sidereal Zodiacal Longitude of the variable.

The constellations / signs are more like TV channels than a radio dial, its either one or the other. There is no such thing as being on the cusp.

Corporations - To clock a corporation use the natal for the name, date, time, place of original incorporation. Must run a complete file. See the book information page on www.gramalkin.com. The time of birth is the time of day when the state official actually stamps the corporation papers for the ORIGINAL incorporation. Last notice was in Delaware all corporations become legal at noon. One would think this would make it easy to clock all the corporations legalized each day on one chart. Obviously they will not all get the same results nor all be stamped at the same time. When athletic team incorporations change owners or coaches it shows up as current events on the corporations horoscopes file however the horoscope inner aspects effect current events and cycles also. It is an interesting case scenario. For example when Eddie D bought the San Francisco Forty Niners Football Team the team experienced a magical Camelot period. Camelot came and left with him, when he lost the team the team basically reverted back to its regular self. The horoscope for when one does ones first trade is just another current event chart.

No gamboling system will work when one is maleficially aspected. However a good system may help when one is beneficially aspected.

Due to the Superior and Inferior Angles positive / negative polarity there is always some negative quality to the opposition aspect as one side of the aspect is an inferior angle (e.g. ascendant / descendent). The Square Aspect for example however may be all on the superior angles and may be good or bad via the intrinsic values involved in the aspect. Even so a Jupiter Venus opposition transiting ones natal Midheaven / Nadir would have mostly benefic results. A Grand Trine between Mars / Saturn / Neptune would have mostly malefic results. The effect of a retrograde is determined by the intrinsic values involved. Jupiter retrograding back and forth across ones ascendant is very good. Saturn retrograding back and forth across ones ascendant is very bad.

Horoscopes should be done Sidereal Zodiac, Geographic, Campanus House Cusps, Octoscope (Natal & Cyclic), for the place of birth.

There is such a thing as Local Natal Angles. The four main angles of the natal horoscope cast for any location aspected to ones natal planets and the incorporation natal of the town will show how that location will effect ones life condition. The local natal angles do not effect one while traveling. One must be someplace long enough to "set up a force field" say twenty-one days or so before local natal angles work. Transits do not effect local natal angles.

The Octoscope Watches are what have the delineation rather than the twelve-house system. On natal and cyclic charts aspects are by sign and house and houses show high, medium and low energy levels - foreground, middle ground and background. The Octotopus is when one does not bother to compute the “Watch Cusps” and just uses the four main and four midpoint angles with the “East Point” angle of course. The elements Fire, Earth Air Water, do not run in order around the zodiac. Example: Aquarius and Pisces are both watery. Libra the artist and lover an air sign intellectual?

The Ingress Charts are a valid modus operandi. Most especially the Capricorn Solar Ingress which is the most important ingress horoscope. Capricorn is the Lead Duck of our cosmic sphere. Our cosmic sphere spirals toward zero degrees of Capricorn. This is also where the bump or wobble is that creates the precession of the equinox.

The Cap Solar horoscope for the return of the transiting sun to zero degrees of Capricorn done for example the longitude and latitude of Washington, DC. USA delineates conditions for the United States of America for the coming year.

The Lunar Ingress horoscope for the return of the transiting moon to zero degrees of any constellation done for example the longitude and latitude of Paris, France delineates lunar return conditions for that location in the coming 28 days or lunar cycle. If one were in Paris the inner-aspects between the Paris Lunar Ingress and your personal astrological file would show how these events would effect you personally and so on.

The Mercury Ingress for the return of the planet Mercury into zero degree of any sign for any coordinates will show how the intrinsic value of Mercury related matters will effect that region for the duration of the planet through the sign and so forth with all the planets ingress charts.

The Hindu version of astrology does at least use a Sidereal Fixed Zodiac. India is said to be the mother of religion and India has been able to maintain the Guru line. They have some very talented people in India who could tell your fortune with a wink. However unless there has been a miraculous transformation their astrology is in a mess. So much of their modus operandi and delineation is mythology driven rather than empirical scientific and their zodiac (or ayanamsa) is a couple of degrees off. The Intrinsic Value of the other planet exists independently also. Intermingle Intrinsic Values they also exist Collectively. E.g. Jupiter = Happiness, Overindulgence. Venus = Love, Overindulgence. Jupiter conjunct Venus = Happiness, Love, Overindulgence.

Just because something good or bad happens to someone it is not necessarily a sign that they did something good or bad in a previous life or experience. "The Intrinsic Value of the Planets"

For practical purposes the intrinsic values of the planets equals the intrinsic value of their corresponding constellation. Mars = Aries or read Aries as Mars et cetera. Yes there are the Solar Crosses - Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable the Fire, Earth, Air, Water elements and such however Venus is Venus and Jupiter is Jupiter every time.

The way to do the planets is to learn one planet a week or one planet a day if you are a quick study. The idea is to take them one at a time until each planetary intrinsic value is second nature to you without having to think about it rather than trying to learn them all at once.

"The Tarot Cards"

The easy way to learn the delineation of the Tarot Cards is to first learn the astrological cross reference to the Major Arcana cards then the Court Cards and finally each individual suit of the Minor Arcana cards. Waite Rider Mini and Albino and Agmuller Crowley Mini Tarot Card Decks are recommended. The words on the Crowley cards are mostly wrong. It’s intrinsic values that count.

"The Major Arcana"

The Major Arcana of the Tarot is simply symbology for the planets and zodiacal constellations. Card numbers 0-21. Begin by arranging the Major Arcana cards in common order. Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.

With the Major Arcana arranged by planet and sign order it is much easier to get into the flow than when arrangement is scrambled via card number. “Gramalkin®™©1970"

The way to learn the card cross-reference of the cards to the planets is to use the flash card technique they use to teach children the alphabet. It is ever so easier to do readings when the cross-reference is second nature, unnecessary to check the cross-reference for every card in a multiple deck reading. One may just draw the cross-references in the border of the cards however by far the preferred technique is sight recognition. Just keep the list in front of one and go through the stacks of cards in order until by rote one instantly recognizes at least the planetary symbology for each card. E.g. The Sun Card = The Sun.

In fact one may do a pretty decent reading using just the Major Arcana cards as long as the layout is kept small, e.g. the Octoscope Layout which is nine cards yet pretty much covers it is pushing the limit. The minimum layout is five cards.

"The Court Cards"

The Court Cards are easily remembered by their Solar Crosses. The Kings are the Cardinal Cross. The Queens the Fixed Cross and the Pages the Mutable Cross. The Aces and Knights the element in pure form, Fire, Earth, Air, Water. The Aces are often the element Not in Motion. The Knights the Element in Motion also indicative of other people acting out ones problems via element, station, situation.

"The Minor Arcana"

Stack them up in order in four piles with the Court Cards by suit - fire, earth, air, and water. A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Page, Knight, Queen, King. Take each suit one at a time and just flash card through them. The pattern of the Minor Arcana will soon appear.

"The Ritual"

In dealing with the actual mechanics of manipulating the cards first start with Grace from the Master and Angels. The most important part of the ritual. However, due to free will Angels generally refrain from forcing their help on one. One must ask for help to get it. The “Angels of the Light” are the ones in charge of getting the cards (the Cast Lot) in the correct Station (the Reader must delineate). For example: Master may I / we please ask you for your grace thank you. Please send Angels to watch over, guide, comfort, guard, protect, help us realize the truth, stay with us until it is taken care of, thank you amen Om.

Without this step one is just wasting ones time, as there is no way to know (even given proper mechanics) the cards are in the correct Station. This Grace process also clears any residual Astral Garbage or leftovers from previous readings hanging about.

To begin the reading first realize exactly what is the query and time period. Decide which layout or layouts are best suited to solving the type of problem, situation, query, or will provide the information one needs. Shuffle seven times. Always cut cards left-handed. Cut into three piles; restack to one pile, as you will then deal. When using the Reversed Card Technique (reversed cards equal lower self or negative manifestation) shuffle seven times, cut into three even piles, reverse the center pile, restack into one pile and shuffle seven more times, cut into three stacks, restack into one pile then deal. One may rub the palms of the hands together a bit then pass the palm of the left hand over the three stacks, feel the high, medium and low energy pile and restack to one pile high to low then deal.

On my desk one will generally find a hand full of “Rider\Waite” Mini and Albino Tarot Card Decks and a couple decks of Agmuller “Crowley” Minis. In my pocket a “Rider\Waite Mini”. The “Minis” are used because of convenience. The cards are small so a large “Layout” and or several “Layouts” may be done on a small table, and both the Crowley and Waite decks have beautiful pictures throughout. The Waite Mini Deck is proportioned like Tarot Cards, The Waite Albino Deck like Playing Cards.

One would say; first toss an “Octoscope General Reading Layout” with a Crowley. Then do a “Past\Present\Future\ Layout” to the left with a Waite Mini. Add a “Yes\No Layout” to the right with a Waite Mini and to the right of that another “Yes\No Layout” with a Waite Albino deck. This results in four Layouts on the table with each layout in a different deck of cards than the ones next to it so the decks do not accidentally get mixed together.

Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.

Regardless of how one attempts to rationalize any misconception of this matter the Sun will still Rise in the East in the morning because the Earth is Rotating on its axis and Revolving about the Sun in its Fixed Sidereal Zodiacal Ecliptical Orbit.

Yes, I know, this is an old story, and one shrouded in myth and mystery....but, seriously, I'd like to know how, where, and when I can get a copy of El Topo...either dvd or video, or even see it in a theater that would show a scrapped up version of what's left of the few remaining films.

I haven't seen this movie in years and want to see it again.

Granted it was very lucky to have been guided directly into the Cyril Fagan / John Mazurek / San Francisco School of Sidereal Astrology linage. Speaking of the muggles (non magical folk) we know they are called MUGGLES as Gramalkin went straight to the top to get this information - Harry Potter. What counts is the Intrinsic Value of the Planets and Angles, The Operating Law and the Sidereal Longitude (as a measuring Device).

The technoids especially the ones that fail to grasp the big picture tend to try to drag all manor of mathematical what not into it. Essentially Azimuth, Altitude, Right Ascension, Declination, Equatorial, Apogee and Perigee, how close a planet is to earth, and so forth have nothing to do with astrological delineation. IT IS SIDEREAL ZODIACAL LONGITUDE THAT COUNTS.

When Stonewall Jackson’s Secondary Progressed Primary Descendant transited his natal Pluto he was shot dead by his own troops and it did not matter what the RA of the left handed Moon Node was or how close the planet was to earth.

Here is an exception case example. Saturn is earthquakes. So one day I asked Mazurek how to tell what latitude the earthquake would occur With Saturn on the Midheaven. He said in the supplement to the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac there is a formula that will give this answer. However as far as delineating a horoscope it is strictly Sidereal Zodiacal Longitude.

The constellations / signs are more like TV channels than a radio dial, its either one or the other.

Corporations - To clock a corporation use the natal for the name, date, time, place of original incorporation. Must run a complete file. See the book information page on www.gramalkin.com. The time of birth is the time of day when the state official actually stamps the corporation papers for the ORIGINAL incorporation. Some states make it very simple. Last notice was in Delaware all corporations become legal at noon. One would think this would make it easy to clock all the corporations legalized each day on one chart. Obviously they will not all get he same results. When athletic team incorporations change owners or coaches the horoscope inner aspects effect current events and cycles. It is an interesting case scenario. The horoscope for when one does ones "first trade" is just another current event chart.

Due to the "Superior and Inferior Angles" positive / negative polarity there is always some negative quality to the opposition aspect as one side of the aspect is an inferior angle (e.g. ascendant / descendent). The Square Aspect for example however may be all on the superior angles and may be good or bad via the intrinsic values involved in the aspect. Even so a Jupiter Venus opposition transiting ones natal Midheaven / Nadir would have mostly benefic results. A Grand Trine between Mars / Saturn / Neptune would have mostly malefic results.

The effect of a retrograde is determined by the intrinsic values involved. Jupiter retrograding back and forth across ones ascendant is very good. Saturn retrograding back and forth across ones ascendant is very bad.

Horoscopes should be done Sidereal Zodiac, Geographic, Campanus House Cusps, Octoscope (Natal & Cyclic), for the place of birth.

There is such a thing as "Local Natal Angles". The four main angles of the natal horoscope cast for any location aspected to ones natal planets and the incorporation natal of the town will show how that location will effect ones life condition. The local natal angles do not effect one while traveling. One must be someplace long enough to "set up a force field" say twenty-one days or so before local natal angles work. Transits do not effect local natal angles.

The Octoscope Watches are what have the delineation rather than the twelve-house system. On natal and cyclic charts aspects are by sign and house and houses show high, medium and low energy levels - foreground, middle ground and background. The Octotopus is when one does not bother to compute the “Watch Cusps” and just uses the four main and four midpoint angles with the “East Point” angle of course. The elements Fire, Earth Air Water, do not run in order around the zodiac. Example: Aquarius and Pisces are both watery. Libra the artist and lover an air sign intellectual?

The Ingress Charts are a valid modus operandi. Most especially the Capricorn Solar Ingress which is the most important ingress horoscope. Capricorn is the "Lead Duck" of our cosmic sphere. Our cosmic sphere spirals toward zero degrees of Capricorn. This is also where the bump or wobble is that creates the precession of the equinox.

The Cap Solar horoscope for the return of the transiting sun to zero degrees of Capricorn done for example the longitude and latitude of Washington, DC. USA delineates conditions for the United States of America for the coming year.

The Lunar Ingress horoscope for the return of the transiting moon to zero degrees of any constellation done for example the longitude and latitude of Paris, France delineates lunar return conditions for that location in the coming 28 days or lunar cycle. If one were in Paris the inner-aspects between the Paris Lunar Ingress and your personal astrological file would show how these events would effect you personally and so on.

The Mercury Ingress for the return of the planet Mercury into zero degree of any sign for any coordinates will show how the intrinsic value of Mercury related matters will effect that region for the duration of the planet through the sign and so forth with all the planets ingress charts.

The way the cosmos works astrology functions under the law of correspondences of the Mystic or Operating Law the law of Analogy, the "Hermes Law" (as above so below, as on the inner so on the outer) also the law of System and Order.

The celestial motion of the planets through the zodiacal constellations (see http://www.gramalkin.com) symbolize the world wide psychological conditions for the entire planet. It is when the celestial configurations (planetary transit aspects) fall activated on ones personal horoscope file of charts one will have the corresponding event experience in ones daily life.

To be an efficient Tarot Card Reader one MUST have sight recognition at least of the astrological cross-reference to the cards and have a Second Nature Realization of the Intrinsic Values of the Planets. Properly done this is actually quite easy as there are only ten planets and seventy-eight cards.

When they can not tell true from false they claim opinion. Truth is neither a matter of opinion, faith, awareness or agreement. Truth is that which changes not, that which remains the same for all on all levels of being this side of vibration.

Astrology, Tarot, any of these techniques one is dealing with a set of SYMBOLOGY for the PSYCHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS one is dealing with. These conditions show how we relate to things and therefore how things happen to or for us, “Mystic Laws” of “Cause and Effect”, et cetera. Tarot Cards (all cast lots) show the future for the way things stand now unless something is done to effectively change the case at hand, which is what we are about.
“The Intrinsic Value of the Planets”

For practical purposes the intrinsic values of the planets equals the intrinsic value of their corresponding constellation. Mars = Aries or read Aries as Mars et cetera. Yes there are the Solar Crosses - Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable the Fire, Earth, Air, Water elements and such however Venus is Venus and Jupiter is Jupiter every time.

The way to do the planets is to learn one planet a week or one planet a day if you are a quick study. The idea is to take them one at a time until each planetary intrinsic value is second nature to you without having to think about it rather than trying to learn them all at once.

“The Tarot Cards”

The easy way to learn the delineation of the Tarot Cards is to first learn the astrological cross reference to the Major Arcana cards then the Court Cards and finally each individual suit of the Minor Arcana cards. Waite Rider Mini and Albino and Agmuller Crowley Mini Tarot Card Decks are recommended. The words on the Crowley cards are mostly wrong. Its intrinsic values that count.

“The Major Arcana”

The Major Arcana of the Tarot is simply symbology for the planets and Zodiacal constellations. Card numbers 0-21. Begin by arranging the Major Arcana cards in common order. Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.

With the Major Arcana arranged by planet and sign order it is much easier to get into the flow than when arrangement is scrambled via card number. “Gramalkin®™©1970”-v11-5.5

The way to learn the card cross-reference of the cards to the planets is to use the flash card technique they use to teach children the alphabet. It is ever so easier to do readings when the cross-reference is second nature, unnecessary to check the cross-reference for every card in a multiple deck reading. One may just draw the cross-references in the border of the cards however by far the preferred technique is sight recognition. Just keep the list in front of one and go through the stacks of cards in order until by rote one instantly recognizes at least the planetary symbology for each card. E.g. The Sun Card = The Sun.

In fact one may do a pretty decent reading using just the Major Arcana cards as long as the layout is kept small, e.g. the Octoscope Layout which is nine cards yet pretty much covers it is pushing the limit. The minimum layout is five cards.

“The Court Cards”

The Court Cards are easily remembered by their Solar Crosses. The Kings are the Cardinal Cross. The Queens the Fixed Cross and the Pages the Mutable Cross. The Aces and Knights the element in pure form, Fire, Earth, Air, Water. The Aces are often the element Not in Motion. The Knights the Element in Motion also indicative of other people acting out ones problems via element, station, situation.

“The Minor Arcana”

Stack them up in order in four piles with the Court Cards by suit - fire, earth, air, and water. A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Page, Knight, Queen, King. Take each suit one at a time and just flash card through them. The pattern of the Minor Arcana will soon appear.

“The Ritual”

In dealing with the actual mechanics of manipulating the cards first start with Grace from the Master and Angels. The most important part of the ritual. However, due to free will Angels generally refrain from forcing their help on one. One must ask for help to get it. The “Angels of the Light” are the ones in charge of getting the cards (the Cast Lot) in the correct Station (the Reader must delineate). For example: Master may I / we please ask you for your grace thank you. Please send Angels to watch over, guide, comfort, guard, protect, help us realize the truth, stay with us until it is taken care of, thank you amen Om.

Without this step one is just wasting ones time, as there is no way to know (even given proper mechanics) the cards are in the correct Station. This Grace process also clears any residual Astral Garbage or leftovers from previous readings hanging about.

To begin the reading first realize exactly what is the query and time period. Decide which layout or layouts are best suited to solving the type of problem, situation, query, or will provide the information one needs. Shuffle seven times. With the left hand cut into three piles, restack to one pile as you will then deal. When using the reversed card technique (reversed cards equal lower self or negative manifestation) shuffle seven times, cut into three even piles, reverse the center pile, restack and shuffle seven more times then deal.

On my desk one will generally find a hand full of “Rider\Waite” Mini and Albino Tarot Card Decks and a couple decks of Agmuller “Crowley” Minis. In my pocket a “Rider\Waite Mini”. The “Minis” are used because of convenience. The cards are small so a large “Layout” and or several “Layouts” may be done on a small table, and both the Crowley and Waite decks have beautiful pictures throughout. The Waite Mini Deck is proportioned like Tarot Cards, The Waite Albino Deck like Playing Cards.

One would say; first toss a “Octoscope General Reading Layout” with a Crowley. Then do a “Past\Present\Future\ Layout” to the left with a Waite Mini. Add a “Yes\No Layout” to the right with a Waite Mini and to the right of that another “Yes\No Layout” with a Waite Albino deck. This results in four Layouts on the table with each layout in a different deck of cards than the ones next to it so the decks do not accidentally get mixed together.

Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.

CURBING VIOLENCE

Here is what I think is disturbing about living a “religious moment” of the human “civilization”.

It is undeniable that the biggest monotheistic religions have proven, for more than two millenniums, that they are much better promoting hate than love; they are much better at killing people than saving them. The reasons monotheistic religions (e.g. Judaism, Islamism and Christianity), are constantly associated with war and terrorism, is because it’s part of their nature. They are fear based behaviors of a species that is capable of foreseeing its own extinction, but unable to come to terms with this ultimate reality.

These religions were created by humans; not as tools to understand life or to investigate the world we live in, but to annihilate questioning through faith and promote obedience. Questioning is a fundamental human trait that aids in the process of examining life, understanding life, and overcoming what religious people call evil, but we know as simply ignorance.

The gods humans created are filled with character traits we struggle to overcome: possessiveness and jealousy, having preferences, and being prone to revenge and violence.

The sacred books are full of these examples. They do emphasize more hate and separation among humans (and between human beings and the rest of the planet), than love and unity between all beings touched by this energy we call life.

You don’t have to be familiar with the sacred books to realize this; just read history or listen to the news. It shows more people hating and killing each other in the name of god, than any other ideology.

You might say: “that’s just politics, greed, love of money and power”. Funny thing though, is that the people who are alienated from politics, that don’t have money and can’t get to power, are the most religious communities; and the most crime infested ones.

Therefore it’s arguable that believing in a god that says he is the only one is intrinsically violent; no matter what mythology you choose. When you try to eliminate diversity, you necessarily produce violence and war.

If you want to promote peace and live a non-violent lifestyle here is an advice: don’t believe in anything exclusively. Examine your life and the world around you, don’t exclude anything; question, experiment and practice. If then you find something beneficial, share it. Outside of that, you are in a bloody fantasy land.

hi, i'm new here. so far, i've only ever seen El Topo & Santa Sangre, but i'm already a great fan, especially of the former.
1 of the best parts of El Topo for me was the sequence involving the satirical U.S. Western Frontier-type town wherein the populace worshipped money & had a russian roulette ritual. in terms of social commentary, Jodorowsky spokes VOLUMES here, & in a very neat & elegant way!

the Movies), whom I'd consider his closest peer as a writer;
movie-wise, his disdain for Hollywood grows by the year, but he's
keenly aware of film's endangered state, avidly noting the good works and bad taste of preservationists like "old playboy" Hugh Hefner and Hewlett- Packard inheritor David Hewlett. Half a century has passed since Anger's Fireworks (1947) first lit up a screen, but the director premiered a video (titled Don't Smoke that Cigarette) last month at the Silverlake Film Festival, and he has other works planned, including a long-awaited filmed version of Aleister Crowley's Gnostic Mass. At a different kind of
ceremony, in conjunction with this year's Film Arts Festival, Anger – ironically, along with Matthew Barney, whose works owe a major debt to Anger – will receive a James T. Phelan Art Award and introduce screenings of two of his works.

Bay Guardian: What's the status of Gnostic Mass?

Kenneth Anger: It is all scripted and planned using a temple in
Austin, Texas, with a group there – a lodge of the OTO. [Ordo Templi Orientis] – that do it once a week. They're completely
familiar with all the moves and the meaning. I just have a problem
with funding, because I really wanna do it on 35mm.

BG: I've read that various directors [Olivier Assayas, Paul Schrader] have been interviewed for a documentary about you.

KA: The [documentary's] director is connected to the OTO. He's not a cameraman; he's what you would call an enabler. It was
his idea to do a documentary, [interviewing] people like Alexandro
Jodorowsky without me present. I've known Jodorowsky for 20 years or more; I'm thinking back to when I was living in London and he came by to see me with Dennis Hopper when I was filming Lucifer Rising.

BG: Do you like Jodorowsky's films?

KA: I admire him as an artist. I believe strongly in animal rights,
so his scenes of slaughtering chickens and so forth – I don't find
that at all funny; I find it disturbing. I'm not myself a chicken, in
the sense that I'm not squeamish. I've been through wars and
revolutions and riots, but I happen to draw the line with animals. We remain friends, though we have a big difference on that concept. I've talked it over with him several times, and we decided
that was his artistic adolescence. As someone who had a beloved
rabbit when I was four years old, I'm not going to just sit back and
smile at slaughter. I consider his films to all be one film –
they're a river named Jodorowsky. You raft your way down it, there's rapids and whirlpools and all kinds of things.

BG: How would you characterize your films?

KA: They're like a coded autobiography, I suppose. Not
that I'm being coy. The regret I have is that I've only made one
[Rabbit's Moon] on 35mm – that was in Paris when some Russians making a documentary for Ionesco gave me some leftover black-and-white film. I always try to make my 16mm look as 35mm as possible. I appreciate the opposite aesthetic, which I guess you could call the Jack Smith aesthetic, but it's not my aesthetic.

BG: Can you think of a contemporary version of Fireworks' sailor, or [1965's] Kustom Kar Kommandos' biker? Do current masculinity types hold any interest for you?

KA: No. I've seen a number of films, usually shorts – in Outfests and things like that – where the filmmaker has personally
called me, saying, "Oh, you were my great inspiration." I see the
result, and I'm kinda chagrined; I wanna crawl under the seat,
because it's too wimpy. It's not that I want violent things. Film as a
medium is so easy to turn into mush; I want structure, I want
intellect. It can be a very anti-intellectual subject, but I want some
thought, and I don't see it much.

These guys – I don't know where they find the money, maybe they blackmail their parents – often work on 35mm. I don't
want to sound like sour grapes, but as a matter of fact I am pissed
off. [Laughs] Because they never say, "Oh, you're a pioneer; let a
group of us produce a film for you."

I've had help over the years, through the Ford
Foundation, and a New York State art grant. And the NEA – before Jesse Helms; I don't think he would approve. And I've had help getting things printed from Sir Paul Getty in England. People say, "Gee, with Paul Getty you won't have any more worries." Not true, he's extremely eccentric. He's had serious problems with his health, mostly his own fault.

BG: You've used everything from Vivaldi to the Paris Sisters as music in your movies. What music strikes your fancy these
days?

KA: To me we've reached the nadir. This is just my personal taste.
There is not one fucking thing I like. Eminem is a particular hate
object. He's a prick.

BG: You've had trouble getting the third volume of Hollywood Babylon published. What does it cover?

KA: I'm covering up until current events, and it's a downer because I don't like contemporary Hollywood. And I don't like
the films. People say, "Well, you should go see Boogie Nights." I
thought it was a pile of shit. I happen to be familiar with the history of the porn industry, and I live in the [San Fernando] Valley, where five miles away they have studios out at Chatsworth. I've never worked for them, but I know editors and lighting technicians and people like that. [Boogie Nights] is a fairy tale.

BG: A conservative, moralistic fairy tale. Are there any recent
scandals you find interesting?

KA: The trouble with scandals today – I'm talking about scandals in show business, related to the industry as they call it – is that
nothing interesting happens. Are the [current Hollywood] stories
worth telling? I don't know. Like, there's a producer who has
thankfully died [who] came from a Quaker background and went the other way when he got into Hollywood. All his sadism came out towards women. He'd pay these women to do the most degrading and painful things, and they weren't into S-M. He'd load them up with drugs so they didn't know which end was up. When he died, a huge sigh of relief occurred throughout Hollywood. He was a monster. But I don't find it that interesting.

I have a couple of pet hates in Hollywood. Travolta, Cruise, and
Kidman – the whole Scientology gang are a bunch of creeps. People have said, "Oh, you mustn't say that in print, or they'll put a rattlesnake in your mailbox!" [Laughs] They're vindictive towards even whispers of criticism. The main chapter hanging
up Hollywood Babylon III is the one on Scientology. Did you see
Battlefield Earth?
It's the most laughable piece of crap I've ever seen, and now
Travolta says, "I'm going to make a sequel." Fine. They can drain
more Scientology money into it. I encourage them to make Battlefield Earth 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. [L. Ron] Hubbard was such a
lousy writer.

BG: Your work has been "borrowed from," to put it politely. There's everything from Pink Narcissus to David Lynch's
soundtrack use of "Blue Velvet," a song you used in Scorpio Rising
(1964).

KA: You don't have to tell me. I have a book of curses I've written. What really bothers me is MTV. All the fine young
cannibals have copied me frame by frame. They have no imagination.

BG: Has the current government been any better than the Reagans in their dealings with you?

KA: I made the mistake – a foolish bit of arrogance on my part – of insulting Nancy Reagan when she was first lady. I
found a picture of her posing for artificial pearls when she was a model, which seemed so perfect, so I printed it. She never would have seen it, but I sent a copy to the White House and wrote, "Check out page so-and-so." [Hollywood Babylon II, page 315.] Two weeks later, the IRS put me up for audit. Now that's what you call A equals B. I don't do that anymore.

BG: Personally and globally, what are you interested
in today?

KA: The world is like a theater, and the grand opera
of hate going on in the Middle East is interesting to me, because I've spent time in Egypt, North Africa, Tunisia, and Morocco. Hate is a powerful turn- on; it builds and builds. Every rock-thrower shot in the forehead by a pissed-off Israeli soldier has brothers who vow vengeance. It's a self-perpetuating nightmare.

[Personally] I might have the opportunity, after all these years, of
making a feature-length commercial film. It's been offered to me by one of the producers of Natural Born Killers. It's a movie called Sex and Rockets concerning the rocket scientist Jack Parsons, who was also a magician and student of Aleister Crowley. He
died in an explosion – the story's a fascinating mix of science
and the occult.
But it's not gonna break my heart if I can't do it; in a sense, it's
something I should have done 20 years ago. I've been able to write on my own – writing on celluloid – poems or sometimes
haiku, but in my fantasy I'd like to do epic things.

BG: Are you looking forward to visiting San Francisco?

KA: I have fond memories of the city. I hear these reports about the dot-coms, and I've thought that I can't even afford to
visit. But the Film Arts Foundation is kindly paying for my flight,
plus a hotel room. My distributor, Canyon Cinema, is based in San
Francisco, but they may get priced out. Still, it's a beautiful city,
and they can't really wreck it – unless they decide to tear down
those Painted Ladies.

A source for Jodorowsky DVDs?

Anyone have El Topo or Holy Mountain on DVD and/or know where I might purchase quality legit DVDs of these two? (I already found a source for a new 2-DVD edition of Santa Sangre, which I plan to order soon) - I know these two films came out on Japanese laser discs way back when (with the genital images optically censored), and I've rented shitty fourth-generation bootlegs on VHS in the past, but I'm wondering if any company has issued these on DVD and if they are in print and available (I'm leery of getting anything on eBay which might turn out to be a DVD burn of one of those crappy boots or such)...
