Congratulations! And praise be to the Sun Absolute! It's about time someone cared enough to out the trickster master for the trickster master he is. Jodo's films have inspired my way of seeing since I first saw EL TOPO in the mid-seventies and for the last fifteen years, the way in which I create cinema (clips from my films are posted at my profile). Jodo is not my only artistic influence, of course but probably my earliest.

say, Ben, can you tell us what U.S. publishing house will release your book? (Creation's a British company, right?) 2 other questions, if you know:

      1. do you know of any plans to bring El Topo: A Book of the Film back into print?
      2. plans to translate & publish Tio Jodo's other books anywhere in the English- speaking world? (the ONLY books of his that i'm aware of that are available in the U.S. are his comics Incal and Metabarons.)

        Hi Holden,

Creation Books are well distributed throughout the US. You'll be able to order my book at any bookstore. Pre-order on Amazon now! Or buy the limited edition signed by Jodorowsky at www.creationbooks.com while they're still available.

El Topo: A Book of the Film was reprinted in the UK by Marion Boyars publisher. It is available to buy online. Jodo was angry when he saw my copy of it as he hadn't given them permission or received any rights!

In answer to your question 2, what books do you mean? His graphic novels or his writings published by Siruela in Spain?

        Best,

        Ben

      Hi Sherpa,

It was a book that needed writing. Trickster, eh? Glad to hear Jodo has had such an impact on you. Hope you get to see the El Topo/Holy Mountain screenings playing over the US at the moment.

      Best,

      Ben

And indeed, The White Lama series has been available in English since the nineties.

I'm about halfway through reading it and - without finding time now to attempt a substantial review - I can say it's very good. There are some very thoughtful insights. Example: describing the scene in Holy Mountain where Berg (the character representing Uranus, financial minister to the President) is lying on a bed using a leopard as a pillow with his feet propped up on a life-sized human doll, the author interprets this as Berg symbolizing a mountain ('berg' is German for mountain) bridging the void between man (the doll at the foot) and nature (the leopard at the top). That's brilliant, I never would have come up with that...

But what is the etymological significance of the other characters' names? Any ideas? Klen? Axon? Fon? Isla (island)? Sel (salt)? Lut?...
